Madeleine, Nouvel AOM

Refurbishing the Aux Trois-Quartiers building, a landmark of the 1930s

In the heart of Paris's protected heritage area, in front of the Église de la Madeleine, the project aims to restore the original heritage value of the former Aux Trois-Quartiers department store, while opening it up to its surroundings.

Built in the 1850s, the Aux Trois-Quartiers building was renovated and expanded in 1930, following the Art Deco style of the time. Several successive interventions have eroded its original heritage character, which our intervention aims to restore. The characteristic Art Deco façades have been preserved, regaining the lateral structural grids that were removed in the 1990s. At the heart of the building, the office floors have been reorganised and freed from their technical constraints to make them more clearly defined.

The transformation of the building's envelope is an opportunity to offer occupants new ways of using the space. The street-facing façades open widely onto continuous balconies that allow occupants to enjoy outdoor spaces on all floors and provide natural ventilation. The seven office levels are crowned by 2,500 m² of planted terraces accessible to all users. The building sheds its former closed-off character and reconnects with the city.
